2026 Ohio election dates and deadlines

Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose released a comprehensive 2026 elections calendar.

February 2026

  • Feb. 4 – Filing deadline for constitutional amendments, declarations of candidacy, and local questions for May 5 Primary/Special Election.
  • Feb. 17 – Boards certify validity of partisan and local option petitions.
  • Feb. 20 – Protests against petitions due by 4 p.m.
  • Feb. 23 – Write‑in declarations must be filed by 4 p.m.
  • Feb. 24 – Official ballots for May 5 must be certified.

April 2026

  • April 6 – Deadline to register to vote for May 5 Primary/Special Election.
  • April 7 – Non‑UOCAVA absentee ballots ready and early in‑person absentee voting begins.

May 2026

  • May 5 – Primary/Special Election Day (polls open 6:30 a.m.–7:30 p.m.).

July 2026

  • July 6 – Deadline to register to vote for Aug. 4 Special Election.
  • July 28 – Absentee ballot applications for Aug. 4 must be received by close of business.

August 2026

  • Aug. 4 – Special Election may be held (polls 6:30 a.m.–7:30 p.m.).
  • Aug. 8 – Mail‑returned absentee ballots for Aug. 4 must be postmarked by Aug. 3 and received.
  • Aug. 24 – Write‑in declarations for Nov. 3 must be filed by 4 p.m.
  • Aug. 25 – Official ballots for Nov. 3 must be certified.

October 2026

  • Oct. 5 – Deadline to register for November 3 General Election.

November 2026

  • Nov. 3 – General/Special Election Day (polls open 6:30 a.m–7:30 p.m.)
