ATHENS- Joe Ray Miller, of Athens, passed peacefully in his Sunnyside home surrounded by family on Monday, July 22, 2024 at the age of 87.
Joe was born Aug. 4, 1936 in Canaanville, Ohio to parents Otis & Gladys Miller. He graduated from Athens High School in 1953, served in the US Army from 1959-1965, and was loved by anyone who met him. Joe knew no stranger, his kindness and gentle smile made all of those around him feel loved. He was a good man, faithful, and strong. A hard worker, Joe loved spending time outside, taking care of his garden, church in the country, and pool for his grandchildren. Lover of animals, he was a caretaker of cats and dogs alike, dedicating his time and resources to giving others a better life.
Joe had a love of good food, owner of Miller’s Chicken (formerly Miller’s Poultry) since 1972. He enjoyed gathering to celebrate life and holidays with his family. He appreciated a good meal and especially a good dessert! Married to his wife, Bessie (Brooks), for 63 years they had four children together: Terri Arnold (Reggie), Sandy Zoulek (Brian), Marilyn Peterson (Dave), & Joe Miller (Jill). He leaves behind a legacy of nine grandchildren whom he loved greatly and who adored him in return: Michael Hawk (Jackie), Tolan Arnold, Sidney Arnold, Samantha McCracken (Michael), Andrew Zoulek (Maya), Paige Simpson (Corey), Morgan Garel (Ben), Riley Hughes (Cody), & Garrett Miller. Also survived by his five great-grandchildren: Rowyn & Mayci Hawk, Emma McCracken, William & Eli Garel + two baby girl Garel’s arriving soon.
Preceded in death by his father (Otis Raymond Miller), mother (Gladys Linton Miller), brother (Harold), and sisters (Mary Lou Dearth & Ruth Ann Bateman). Joe was gracious to all, even in his final days. His sense of humor and gentle spirit will be missed by all of those who knew and loved him, but we find peace that he is pain-free and walking joyfully with Jesus.
Please join us as we celebrate his remarkable life at 2pm on Saturday, July 27 at his church, Centennial Church (9 Frost Road, Coolville, OH 45723), with Pastor Denver Dodrill. Burial will be in the Centennial Cemetery. A viewing will be held Friday, July 26 at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home in Athens, OH from 5-8pm.
