To the editor:
As a Meals On Wheels driver, I have seen firsthand how important this program is to seniors in our county. There is a great need for meals for the elderly or home-bound individuals, not just for food security but also for their health and safety.
Often, the Meals on Wheels driver is the only person that clients will see in a week or longer. Many clients and family members appreciate the sense of security visits give. I and other drivers have found clients when they have fallen and, sometimes, been laying on the floor for hours, along with other emergency-type scenarios.
I think that a lot of people assume all senior citizens have family. While most do, for many their families live far away, have busy lives, or don’t take the extra step to check on their loved ones. Our community should support more senior citizens with Meals on Wheels, as one day, we may be the ones waiting for that delivery. So, I’m asking residents of Athens County to please support the Meals On Wheels program by voting in favor of the Senior Services Levy (Issue 7) in the upcoming election in March.
