  • Boil order rescinded: The Tuppers Plains–Chester Water District has lifted the boil order issued on April 6. All in service wells have tested negative for E. coli and total coliform bacteria.  Treated water leaving the treatment plant tested negative for E. coli and total coliform bacteria throughout the advisory.
  • Alex BOE meeting change: The Alexander Local Schools Board of Education meeting regularly scheduled for Wednesday, April 10, has been rescheduled for 7 p.m. Monday, April 15, in the Alexander High School library, 6125 School Road, Albany, and livestream.
  • Office move: The Athens/Meigs Salvation Army office has moved from The Plains to 830 E. State St., Athens. If you need assistance, please call 513-516-1771 to schedule an appointment.
  • Bike path closure: The Hockhocking Adena Bikeway will be closed at Stimson Avenue beginning April 18 so the city of Athens cna construct a new emergency access and boat ramp on the Hocking River. That section of the bikeway will reopen in early July.
  • Eclipse glasses recycling: Don’t throw away your eclipse glasses! Take them to any Athens County Public Library or Logan Hocking Public Libraries branch by May 1. The Athens Hocking Solid Waste District will send reusable glasses to Astronomers Without Borders, which will distribute them in other countries. Any that cannot be reused will be recycled as much as possible.
  • Lifeguards wanted: The City of Nelsonville is accepting applications for lifeguards at the Aquatic Center for the 2024 summer season. Minimum age is 16; you do not have to be a certified lifeguard to apply. Pay is $11/hour for 8-hour shifts including weekends and holidays. Completed applications are due by 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 17. Athens City Council recently enacted ordinances 

  • 0-25-24: Amends Ordinance 62–63 authorizing preliminary engineering services for improvements to the SR 682/SR 56 intersection, increasing the appropriation from $350,000 to $750,000
  • 0-26-24: Amends City Code Title 17, Municipal Income Tax, to specify that the city’s income tax applies to all prizes, award and winnings from gaming, wagering, sweepstakes and games of chance by city residents and of nonresidents if the winning occurred within city limits, as well as any funds won by city residents through the State Lottery Commission, and noting that tax returns must be filed even if no tax is due.
  • 0-27-24: Amends Ordinance 130-23, 2024 Appropriations, increasing appropriations to the municipal court by $115,000 and decreasing appropriations to the Diversion Fund and the DUI Court Fund by $44,900 and $66,500, respectively.

Road construction

  • West Union Street, Athens: One crew will continue installation of a 12-inch water line to within 50 feet of the intersection with Shafer Street. A second crew will install service line tie-ins for the area between Jefferson Avenue and Shafer Street and install meters on the completed section of the 12-inch line from the SR 682 bridge toward Jefferson Avenue. A third crew has begun to remove pavement and prepare the north section of West Union Street for full-depth replacement.
  • US 50/Washington Road, Albany: Signal replacement and turn lane installation. Expected completion: May 1.
