  • Boil order: Nelsonville Water Department customers on Frank, Williams, John, Edwards, and Fredderick streets plus Madison Street from Edwards Street to the Hocking County line. Ends at noon Wednesday, May 1.
  • OU Move Out help: The Athens-Hocking Solid Waste District seeks volunteers to help at donation sites for Ohio University’s move-out May 2–3. The program keeps reusable or recyclable items out of landfills
  • Event: Rolling Stone journalist Justin Noble will read from his new book, “Petroleum-238: Big Oil’s Dangerous Secret and the Grassroots Fight to Stop It,” and talk about the K&H injection wells in Torch at the Athens Public Library at 2 p.m. Wednesday. At 6 p.m. he will present at the Athens Community Center.
  • Indy context: The Ohio Oil and Gas Commission recently upheld the Ohio Division of Natural Resources’ push to immediately cease operating injection wells in Torch.
  • Ohio University is recruiting women with body image concerns who take measures to control their weight to participate in a three-part research study examining psychological and physiological responses to eating in Athens.   • U4meme4u, a nonprofit that provides educational and recreational experiences for southeast Ohio youth, will offer two two-week sessions of camp, July 8-12 and August 5-9. Registration is $55 per week.
  • The Nelsonville Police Department has become aware of a telephone scam involving requests for donations to the department. This is a scam; the Nelsonville Police Department is not requesting donations from the public. Do not make donations or give personal or financial information to this caller. If you’ve lost money to a phone scam or have information about the company or scammer who called you, tell the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. If you didn’t lose money and just want to report a call, use the streamlined reporting form at DoNotCall.gov.

Traffic advisories

Athens County Engineer

  • Beebe Road (CR 109) is closed between the intersections with Haga Ridge Rd. (Rome Twp. 191) and Jewell Hollow Road (Rome Twp. 189) until 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 1. Crews are replacing a culvert.
  • County crews are grading and patching county roads in Coolville.

West Union Street, Athens

  • Installation of a 12-inch water line to within 50 feet of the intersection with Shafer Street will be completed by May 6. Service line installations will continue until all customers are connected to the new line. 
  • Upon completion of excavation work from the fairgrounds to the OhioHealth O’Bleness Memorial Hospital entrance, crews will begin removing pavement from Davison Court to West Union Street.
  • Installation of new storm structures and underground drains will continue from the Hocking River bridge at SR 682 to Herrold Avenue.
  • Traffic remains one way from the bridge to the hospital entrance and on Herrold Avenue. Two-way traffic is open between Shafer Street and the hospital entrance. 

Ohio Department of Transportation projects:

  • U.S. 50 traffic signal replacement: U.S. 50 at Washington Road/Meadowbrook Road in Albany. Short-term lane closures with flaggers. Under way. Expected completion: October.
  • U.S. 50 joint repair and resurfacing: From Della Drive to River Road and from Vanderhoof Road to SR 7; lane restrictions. Under way. Expected completion: August.
  • SR 690 resurfacing: Between U.S. 50 and SR 550. Begins April 29. Short-term lane closures with flaggers. Expected completion: July 31.

Recently adopted Athens City Council ordinances

  • 0-28-24: Amending the 2024 appropriation ordinance and authorizing interfund transfers of $100,000 from the unappropriated balance to the general fund to pay 2024 Bureau of Workers Compensation invoices; $140,000 from the ARPA Fund, 286, T.C. 500, to the ARPA Fund, 286, T.C. 600; and $160,432.70 from the ARPA Fund, 286, to ACIC Fund, 906. 
  • 0-29-24: Approving a then-and-now certificate for $3,358 to BIS Digital for a digital recording system maintenance contract.
  • 0-30-24: Amending the 2024 Appropriation Ordinance to authorize transfer of $130,000 from the unappropriated balance to the Street Rehabilitation Fund, 572, T.C. 500, and amending Ordinance 65-23 to authorize the Service-Safety Director to spend up to $580,000 from the Street Rehabilitation Fund, 572, T.C. 500, for rehabilitation of the Stimson Avenue bridge
  • 0-40-24: Authorizing the Service-Safety Director to purchase a fire pumper truck from Atlantic Emergency Solutions, Inc., for $1.14 million. 
  • 0-44-24: Authorizing participation in the Ohio Department of Transportation’s annual winter road salt bid.
