Donna Jean (Buck) Slagle

ATHENS- Donna Jean (Buck) Slagle, age 94 of Athens, passed away peacefully at home Monday evening after an extended illness. She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl C. Buck and Pauline S. Buck, brother-in-law Carl Henning, brother-in-law Robert C. Slagle and sister-in-law Vera M. Slagle. 

Donna graduated from Athens High School and Ohio University with a Bachelor degree in elementary education. She was a member of Alpha Xi Delta sorority and remained active after graduation. She taught 2nd grade at West Elementary for 3 years, was a substitute teacher in The Plains, Chauncey, and Athens City Schools for many years and finished her career as a third grade teacher at East Side Elementary. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Athens, OH. Donna volunteered as an election poll worker, at the Castrop Health Center of O’Bleness Hospital and the American Red Cross for many years.

Donna enjoyed ballroom dancing with the Pomeroy and Parkersburg Dance Clubs. She was a world traveler who really enjoyed going on cruise ships with Don and friends. She liked gardening, camping, reading, sewing, playing card games and dominoes and spending time with friends and family.

Donna is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Donald L. Slagle, sister Judith K. Henning of Naples, FL., daughter Susan (Lincoln) Spicer of Newark, OH, son Mark D. Slagle of Athens, grandson Lincoln (Whitney) Spicer II of Newark, OH, granddaughter Lauren R. Spicer of Columbus, OH, step-grandchildren Stacey Vermilion of Heath, OH, Jade (Anastasios) Gianakopoulos of Clearwater, FL and Melvin (Kristin) of Newark, OH, great-granddaughters Madelijn and Annelies Spicer of Newark, OH and many more beloved extended family members including the entire Buck and Slagle families. 

Special thanks to the hospice staff who helped care for her. She will be greatly missed by all who loved her.

Visitation hours will be Friday, May 3rd from 11:00 a.m.- 1:00 p.m. at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home, Athens.  A graveside service will follow at 1:15 p.m. at West Union St. Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers donations may be made to OhioHealth Home Care and Hospice, American Red Cross or a charity of your choice.  Please share a memory, a note of condolence or sign the online register at www.jagersfuneralhome.com.
