ATHENS- Gary Curtis Gould, age 87, of Athens, passed away, Wednesday evening, May 1, 2024 at his home. Born Aug. 15, 1936 in Athens, he was the son of the late Raymond C. Gould and Leta Marquis Gould.
A 1954 graduate of Rome-Canaan High School and a 1962 graduate of Ohio University, Gary was a partner/ owner- operator at Hawk’s Cycle Sales for 30 years and as a bookkeeper for Athens Excavating and Concrete. He was a member of the Amesville-New England Parish. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in the Pacific Theatre.
Gary enjoyed hare scrambles and enduros on his motorcycle, Athens men’s softball league, the Oxbow Golf Senior League, and on Saturday night watching “The Lawrence Welk Show”. He also enjoyed working with the Federal Hocking Band Boosters, reading to children at the Amesville Elementary School where he was awarded the Peggy Riley Award and cutting firewood for Good Works, Inc. His service to children and to his church were most important to him. He was also an animal lover and his pet companion, Buddy was “The World’s Greatest Cat”.
Gary is survived by his wife of 42 years, Teresa A. Perry Gould; two daughters, Shonda McKnight of Florida and Susan Gould of Athens; a son, Craig Allen (Michelle) Gould of Florida; four grandchildren; his sister, Carole Gould McCune of Athens; several nieces and nephews; and many special friends including David Diggle, Steve Hays and Bob Grinstead.
Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by a brother, Paul M. Gould. A memorial service will be held Wednesday May 8th at 1:00 p.m. at Jagers & Sons Funeral Home, Athens with Steve Hays officiating. Friends may call Wednesday 11:00 a.m. until time of service at the funeral home. Military Funeral Honors will be conducted at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Good Works, Inc. or the Amesville-New England Parish.
