Frederick “Scrap” G. Savage, 85 of Millfield passed away Sunday May 5, 2024, at the Laurels of Athens. Born November 28, 1938, in Athens County, he was the son of the late Raymond and Mildred Canter Savage. He retired from Ohio University in 1997 after 32 years as manager of the food warehouse. He was a member of the Trimble Masonic Lodge #557 F.&A.M., the Scottish Rite 32nd degree, Athens County Shrine Club, The Aladdin Shriners, Hocking Valley Sports Club, Athens Elks Lodge #973, a charter member of the Chauncey Amvets Post #53, past Commander of the Athens American Legion Post #21, past Chef De Gare 40 & 8 where he was co-chair of the Nurse’s training program at Hocking College and the bingo chairman for 21 years, past member of the Athens County Veterans Commission for 10 years where he served as President for 9 years, past Department Representative for the Athens County Veterans Clinic, past Vice President for the Southeastern District of Veterans Association for 7 counties, former member of the Ohio University Credit Union Board of Directors, and former member of the Sunday Creek Water Board. He served in the Army during the Vietnam Era with the 37th Armor 2nd Armor Division which was known as “Hell on Wheels”. Scrap enjoyed life. He enjoyed having breakfast and dinner with his many friends. He especially enjoyed traveling to Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he sat in the old town square eating ice cream and listening to mariachi bands and traveling to Santa Fe to the Indian Market Fair. He was an avid Ohio State Buckeyes fan, and enjoyed hunting, especially deer hunting with his best friend Grigsby, whom he truly missed. Scrap was a basketball referee for boys and girls for several years. He was a Chauncey-Dover alumni honor grad in 2011. He was nominated due to his dedication to helping veterans and their widows. Above all, he loved his family and grandchildren, referring to his wife, Ruth, as the love of his life.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Ruth Chapman Savage of Millfield; daughters, Christy (Roger) Fields of Hamilton, Ohio and Mistie (Todd) McGuire of Millfield; grandchildren, Harris Fields, Jacob Fields, Brytton (Brett) Jarrett, Emersynn McGuire, and D’Laynee McGuire; brother, Jack Savage; half-brothers, Sam (Jean Triplett) Savage, Larry (Jeannie) Savage, Joe (Tina) Savage, Rick (Judy) Savage, Tom Savage, Jim (Debbie) Savage; a half-sister, Sally; and brothers-in-law, Jay (Anna) Chapman and Dana (Sherry) Chapman.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Jean Hooper; half-sister, Mary Belle; and half-brothers, Randy and Bill.
Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday May 10, 2024, at the Bishopville Church of Christ. Interment will be in the Concord Cemetery where there will be a military graveside service conducted by the United States Army and the Combined Color Guard Unit. Visitation will take place at the church on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 with a Masonic Service taking place at 7:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to St. Jude Childrens Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN, 38105 or to help a veteran or veteran’s widow in need.
