Sidewalk repairs, signal adjustments will improve safety

To the editor:

I am writing to bring to the public’s attention several critical issues concerning walkability and pedestrian safety in the city of Athens, particularly focusing on the conditions of sidewalks and traffic signal operations. As a resident deeply invested in the well-being of our community, I believe it is imperative that these issues are addressed promptly to ensure a safer and more accessible environment for all residents.

Firstly, the sidewalks on West State Street, particularly between Congress and the cemetery, are in terrible condition. The sidewalks are uneven, cracked, and impassable for individuals using wheelchairs or pushing baby strollers. Such conditions grossly undermine accessibility and pose a serious safety risk. The Athens Accessibility Committee has previously voiced concerns regarding these conditions, and the city needs to prioritize repairing and maintaining these sidewalks to restore safe passage for all residents.

Secondly, multiple hazardous situations have been encountered involving conflicting traffic signals for pedestrians and drivers. For instance, at the intersection of East State St and Stimson Ave, in front of the Prokos Hotel, there have been incidents where drivers, following a left-turn arrow into the crosswalk, failed to notice pedestrian signals.

This has resulted in near-collisions where pedestrians have had to take emergency actions to avoid being hit, despite having the right of way. Similar tensions and near-collisions have been frequently observed at the intersections of Washington St and Court St, W State St and Court St, as well as at crossings on E State St in front of Walmart and Kroger.

These intersections reveal a critical flaw in our city’s traffic signal system, whereby green left-turn arrows directly conflict with active pedestrian walk signals. This leads to confusion, disregard for crosswalks, and dangerous confrontations between drivers and pedestrians. Pedestrians, who legally have the right of way, are placed in precarious situations due to poor signal coordination.

To address these concerns, I propose the following solutions:

1. Sidewalk Repairs: Expedite repairs and maintenance of the sidewalks on West State Street between Congress and the cemetery to ensure they are accessible and safe for all residents.

2. Traffic Signal Adjustments: Reconfigure traffic signals to eliminate conflicts between left-turn arrows and pedestrian walk signals. This can be achieved by stopping all vehicular movement through the crosswalk when pedestrian signals are active, ensuring pedestrians can cross safely without interference.

Implementing these solutions will significantly enhance the walkability of our city and ensure the safety and accessibility of all pedestrians, including individuals in wheelchairs, parents with strollers, and other vulnerable populations.

I urge the city to give these issues the attention they deserve and take prompt action to make these necessary changes. Improving the walkability of Athens will not only benefit the safety of our residents but also enhance the overall community experience and foster a more inclusive environment.
