General announcements
- Update updated: Athens Mayor Steve Patterson’s weekly update has been moved from Wednesday, Sept. 18, to Friday, Sept. 20. The updates are held at 2 p.m. in city council chambers and are livestreamed on the city’s YouTube channel.
- Stock the Trailer: The Albany Independent Fair will hold a nonperishable food drive during the fair this week. Stock the Trailer is a fundraising competition among participating county and independent fairs; fairs that collect the most food (by weight) can win up to $5,000.
- Billing office closed: The City of Athens Utilities Billing Office will be closed Thursday, Sept. 19, for staff training. Utility bills can be paid at the payment box outside City Hall or online.
- Mental health first aid training: Buckeye Hills Regional Council will offer free Mental Health First Aid training this fall for those who work with or provide services to older adults. Registration is required. The first session will be held Friday, Sept. 20.
- Take Kids Fishing Day: Union Sportsmen’s Alliance will host a Take Kids Fishing Day at Buckeye Park in Marietta Saturday, Sept. 21, beginning at 10 a.m. The first 150 children ages 2 to 15 will receive a free fishing rod and reel.
- Candidate forums: The League of Women Voters will host candidate forums for the Athens County commissioner and treasurer races on Tuesday, Sept. 24, and Thursday, Oct. 3, respectively.
- Fitness court opens: On Wednesday, Sept. 25, City of Athens will open an outdoor Fitness Court by the Hockhocking Adena Bikeway near the new fire station on Stimson Avenue.
Traffic advisories
Athens
- West Union Street: Two-way traffic is open from the bridge at SR 682 to Jefferson Street and from Shafer Street to Hospital Drive. Herrold Avenue also is two-way. Jefferson Street to Hospital Drive is one way eastbound (towards Uptown), with work extending past the gas station to Seaman’s. Business entrances will experience temporary closures. - Bridge repair: Banjo Hill Road (Alexander Twp. 1269)
- Mowing: Dowler Ridge/Five Points/New Marshfield Road (CR 3), Baker Road (CR 10), Factory Road (CR 14), Hooper Ridge Road (CR 36), New England Road (CR 48), Enlow Road (CR 80) and Felton Road (CR 84).
Ohio Department of Transportation
- Trimble Twp. 313: Road closures will be in place for the resurfacing and culvert maintenance project through the Wallace O’Dowd Wildlife Area. Expected completion: Sept. 15.
- SR 690 landslide repair: Between Dutch Creek Road (CR 34) and SR 550. One-lane traffic will be maintained with temporary signals. Expected completion: Nov. 1.
- Albany traffic signal replacement: U.S. 50 at Washington Road/Meadowbrook Road in Albany. Short-term lane closures with flaggers. Expected completion: Nov. 1.
- SR 144 slope stabilization (2): One lane closed between Mountain Bell Road and SR 7; traffic maintained with temporary signals. Expected completion: Nov. 1. One lane closed between Jewell Hollow Road and Bethany Ridge Road; traffic maintained with temporary signals. Expected completion: Nov. 15.
