To the editor:
Election day is coming fast! While much of the focus of the media is on the presidential contest, there are many down ballot candidates who, when elected, can have a very direct effect on our lives locally.
Our local League of Women Voters focuses on local races, and one of the opportunities we provide for voters is our candidate forums. At the forums, voters can not only hear answers to questions posed by the attending media and public, they also have the opportunity to see those candidates in person, and to speak to them after the event if they so choose.
Two candidate forums are scheduled, both to be held at the Athens Community Center, 701 E. State Street, at 6:30 p.m. The candidates for Athens County Commissioner, Charlie Adkins and Jon Rose, will meet on Tuesday, Sept. 24. The candidates for Athens County Treasurer, Dawn Deputy and Taylor Sappington, will meet on Thursday, Oct. 3.
We the voters will be the ones who hire the candidates seeking these positions. The League of Women Voters strongly encourages voters to take this opportunity to learn as much as possible about them. If you can’t attend, these events will be recorded and available to be viewed at AthensLeagueOfWomenVoters.org.
