Dog of the Week: Casy

When Casey first came into the shelter, she was visibly scared and pressed her body against the back of the kennel to keep as much space as possible between her and anyone else. Volunteers and staff wondered how they would ever walk her since she clearly was refusing any type of contact. Luckily, a trainer suggested using string cheese to coax her out. Guess what? Casey LOVES cheese. In no time, she was walking out of the kennel, going on walks, and accepting physical touch and affection.

Now, Casey plays a very important role in the shelter. She loves other dogs and serves as a “helper” for other shelter residents who are too scared to walk on their own. She seems to understand what other dogs need and works to help them feel more comfortable. Casey is also very perceptive with humans and seems to enjoy getting attention from her handler and making them laugh! Over a month and quite a few sticks of string cheese later, Casey is more confident and yes, a bit chubbier. She is ready to mark the final leg of her journey—finding a forever family and home.
