Winter weather
- Level 2 Snow Emergency: At production time, Athens County was under a Level 2 snow emergency; drive only if necessary. The Athens County Sheriff’s Office asks residents not to call the office or private message its social media accounts for information. The most recent information will be posted on social media and sent via the sheriff’s office app.
- Bus route cancellations: Public transit services in Athens and Logan and several GoBus routes are canceled for today, Jan. 7.
- Trash pickup delays: Road conditions continue to interrupt solid waste services in the county. Trash and recycling pickup for customers of Athens Hocking Recycling Centers (Southeast Ohio Recycling Terminal) is on a two-day delay: for example, Monday customers will be served on Wednesday. Rumpke customers are on a one-day delay; customers should continue to place material at the curb the night before scheduled collection. The Athens-Hocking Landfill is now open.
- Office closures: Some government offices and businesses remain closed on Tuesday, Jan. 7. Call ahead before leaving home. The WSEO/WAIS Facebook page reposts status updates from across the region.
- Food banks: HAPCAP offices are on a two-hour delay and The Market at Hocking in Logan is closed all day on Tuesday, Jan. 7.
General announcements
- Signal improvements bids: The City of Athens is accepting bids to install fiber optic cable and upgrade traffic signals on East State Street. Bids must be received by 10 a.m. Jan. 23, when bids will be opened and read aloud. The engineer’s estimate for the work is $669.112.
- Athens sculpture RFP: The City of Athens is accepting proposals for an outdoor sculpture to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the opening of the Athens Community Center. Applicants must be 18 years or older and proposals must be submitted by Monday, Feb. 10.
- Athens Community Center photos and memories: Area residents are invited to submit photos, memories and mementos to create a gallery for display at the community center. Email yours to athensapr@ci.athens.oh.us.
- Amateur radio license preparation classes: The Athens County Amateur Radio Association will offer a class series Jan. 13–March 17 for those wishing to learn more about the methods and practices of HAM radio and prepare for an entry-level license test. - Chauncey streetscape design: The Village of Chauncey is polling to determine the look of a new streetscape design it will install in the summer. Weigh in here or in person at Village Hall.
- Cultural Agricultural Use Valuation: Continuation forms for property-owning farmers using the CAUV tax savings program are due to the Athens County Auditor by Monday, March 3. Notifications and paperwork are being dispersed by mail.
- Dementia prevention research: Meigs County Health Department is asking people over age 75 (who are not taking a statin) to participate in a free, large-scale dementia prevention study. The process can be coordinated by phone at home with visits if necessary, or in person. Registration details here.
- Audit released: The Ohio Auditor of State has released its audit of the Ohio University Inn, Inc., for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2023, and ending June 30, 2024.
Holiday tree pickup
- City of Athens: Free pickup of live trees throughout January. Place trees at the curb and call the city’s yard waste pickup line at 740-592-3343 to schedule.
- Tree upcycling: The Athens-Hocking Solid Waste District will accept cut holiday trees at three drop-off locations until Wednesday, Jan. 22. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources will use the trees to create local habitat for regional wildlife. Please remove all decorations and lights and place the trees at the designated location at the sites; trees may be dropped off anytime on any day of the week. No dumping other materials. Traffic advisories
Athens:
- West Union Street: Crews will perform small finish work and project clean-up this week. The street is open to two-way traffic. Crews will return in the spring to complete some water work affected by back ordered parts. Questions or concerns may be directed to the City of Athens Engineering and Public Works Department at 740-593-7636.
- Court Street and Union Street: Curb ramp replacement and brick leveling are taking place on the East Union Street side of Court Street. Traffic and pedestrian travel will be restricted at times.
