ATHENS, Ohio — The Athens Justice Coalition launched its “Divest from Death” campaign on Wednesday, Feb. 26 with a protest outside Cutler Hall on Ohio University’s campus.

The group delivered a letter to Ohio University administrators calling for the university to halt its business relationship with military contractors and fossil fuel companies. A press release put out by the group stated that the university needs to “permanently divest from military contractors such as Boeing, Lockheed Martin and RTX Corporation, as well as fossil fuel giants like ExxonMobil and Chevron. Investments in these industries – which profit from environmental destruction, war, and state violence – contradict the university’s so-called commitment to sustainability and social justice.”

The protest began at 4 p.m. on College Green before the group entered Cutler Hall to deliver their letter of demands. The group then returned outside and began numerous chants criticizing the military-industrial complex, criticizing Ohio University and praising democracy.
