Pick a passion and raise your voice to preserve American decency

To the editor:

In our current political climate of Trump’s executive orders meant to dismember our democracy, and Musk’s illegal firings of federal workers, American citizens must not stand by and allow these actions to happen without constant resistance, especially supporting legal resistance by the courts.

In the autocratic beginnings of Hitler’s Nazi regime, the lighting speed of threats to annex neighboring Austria were met with concession by the Austrian leaders. Their concession taught the Nazi leadership what was possible, and soon allowed Hitler to create the Central Office for Jewish Emigration. Very shortly the Nazis began a national pogrom to get rid of all Jews. We all know the hideous result of that initiative.

Like the Austrians, Americans, too, may be receptive to following new rules by a threatening authority, even to the point of willingness to harm or kill others if instructed to by a heinous ruler.

It is absolutely necessary to resist Trump’s bulldozing of our democratic government NOW! Institutions, although flawed, help preserve decency and stabilize our country. They need our strong support and help now as never before in America. So choose an institution, a court, a news service, a law, a labor union, an educational system, a health system, and take its side, raising your voice, calling legislators, and also protesting. And in so doing, holding the United States dear and strong.
