Election letter deadline: The last day to submit letters to the editor to the Athens County Independent regarding people or issues on the May 6 ballot is Tuesday, April 15.


Government

  • Audits: Athens Athens County Agricultural Society, Dec. 1, 2020 through Nov. 30, 2022.
  • Nelsonville City Council appointees: The Nelsonville City Council President Greg Clement appointed Nic Joseph Saul to fill the seat vacated by Tony Dunfee and Cameron Peck to the seat vacated by Justin Booth.
  • Former OhioMeansJobs building for sale: The property at 510 W. Union St. that formerly housed the Athens County OhioMeansJobs office has been listed for sale. For more information, call 740-677-4203 or email athensjfsomjdirector@gmail.com.

Traffic advisories

  • Athens County:
    • Mowing on Bean Hollow Road (CR 26); removing brush on Fox Lake Road (CR 81); patching on Wolfe Bennett Road (CR 73).
  • Ohio Department of Transportation
    • U.S. 33 and SR 682 Roundabout: Traffic maintained by flaggers on SR 682. Right shoulder closed on U.S. 33 westbound. SR 682 ramp to U.S. 33 westbound close April 1 through Aug. 1. Estimated completion: Oct. 31.
    • SR 7 resurfacing: Begins April 28 from the Meigs County line to Church Road. Traffic will be maintained by flaggers. Estimated completion: July 15. 

Community

  • Athens City Commission on Disabilities: Seventh annual Walk, Talk and Roll starts at 11:30 a.m. this Friday, April 4, at the Athens County Courthouse. The event includes a community challenge to see if people can cross Court Street using a manual wheelchair. The event ends at 1 p.m.
  • Preschool registration: Athens Community Center Preschool is for potty-trained children ages 3 through 5 and will be held weekdays from 9 a.m. to noon. Registration begins Friday, April 4; $25 per child. Athens Community Center, 701 E. State St., Athens
  • Film fest returns: The Athens International Film + Video Festival will present its 52nd edition from April 7–13, showcasing over 200 films from more than 58 countries. The Athena Cinema, 20 S. Court St., Athens.
  • Chemistry presentation: Teen Science Café this month will feature Athens High School chemistry teacher Phil Armstrong, discussing the history of chemistry and chemistry experiments. Food will be served. 5:30–7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 3. Ohio Valley Museum of Discovery, 67 Columbus Road, Athens

  • The Athens County Food Pantry: Free food to income-eligible families every weekday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. 13183 SR 13, Millfield.
