Election letter deadline: The last day to submit letters to the editor to the Athens County Independent regarding people or issues on the May 6 ballot is TODAY, Tuesday, April 15.
Government
- Sculpture park reveal: The City of Athens and Athens Municipal Arts Commission will officially open the Athens Sculpture Park at 4 p.m. Saturday, April 26, at the firehouse complex on Stimson Avenue. The event is open to the public and will take place rain or shine. The event will include a short program and a self-guided viewing of the sculptures, followed by a reception in the Community Room at the Firehouse on Stimson.
Traffic advisories
- Athens County:
- Bethany Ridge Road (CR 53): Berming
- Taylor Ridge Road (CR 67) and Enlow Road (CR 80): Patching.
- City of Athens
- Joneswood Drive: Closed between Columbia Avenue and Terrace Drive due to a road slip. No through or emergency traffic. Motorists are asked to avoid the area.
- Ohio Department of Transportation:
- U.S. 33 and SR 682 Roundabout: Traffic maintained by flaggers on SR 682. Right shoulder closed on U.S. 33 westbound. SR 682 ramp to U.S. 33 westbound closed April 1 through Aug. 1. Estimated completion: Oct. 31.
- SR 7 resurfacing: Begins April 28 from the Meigs County line to Church Road. Traffic will be maintained by flaggers. Estimated completion: July 15.
Community
- Free Fare Week: Fares for Athens Public Transit and Athens On Demand Transit are free through Friday, April 18.
- Food distribution: The SE Ohio Foodbank will distribute one shelf-stable meals box and supplemental produce as available for Athens County residents from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, April 17, at the Coolville Public Library, 26401 Main St., Coolville. - Advocacy training: The League of Women Voters of Athens County will present a workshop on How Things Work at the Statehouse from 6:30–8:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 22, at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 184 Longview Heights Road, Athens.
- Spring recycling day: Bring old mattresses, housewares, medical equipment, clothing, books, scrap metal, electronics, and other select items you don’t want to go to the landfill to the Athens-Hocking Solid Waste District’s Spring Recycling Day, 9 a.m.–1 p.m. Saturday, April 26, at the Athens County Fairgrounds, West Union Street, Athens.
