Government

  • Nelsonville committee meetings: Nelsonville City Council will hold three committee meetings on Tuesday, April 22. All three meetings will be held at City Hall, 211 Lake Hope Drive, and livestreamed.
    • 6 p.m.: Utilities Committee; water plant upgrade discussion
    • 6:20 p.m.: Park and Recreation Committee; 2025 pool rates and Aquatic Center updates
    • 6:50 p.m.: Finance Committee; city finances
  • Buckeye Hills position: Buckeye Hills Regional Council is accepting nominations for individuals to serve on the District 18 Natural Resources Assistance Council for a three-year term. Nominations due 4:00 p.m., May 30. There is one vacant position.

Traffic advisories

  • Athens County:
    • Four Mile Road (CR 59) and North Torch Road (CR 62): Brush removal
    • Strouds Run Road (CR 20): Culvert cleaning
    • McDougal Road (CR 28): Mowing
  • Athens Township:
    • South Blackburn Road (Athens Twp. 32): Closed from 6553 S. Blackburn Road to 6412 S. Blackburn Road for approximately 30 days beginning Monday, April 21, for slip repair and construction of a retaining wall. Property/driveway access will be maintained. Properties east of the blocked area must be accessed from Hooper Street via US 32/US 50. All safety services and transportation departments as well as the Athens County Sheriff will be on notice of the closure and re-opening dates.
  • Chauncey: Phase two of sewer line installation will continue on Nye Street from Thursday, April 21 to May 2. The work area will be between Jacobs Avenue and Mill Street, beginning at Jacobs and working towards Mill.
    • Future work to install sewer on Ellis Avenue will follow, beginning at the intersection of Coe Road, working west toward Converse Street and SR 13. Anticipated time frames:
      • May 5–9: Ellis between Coe and Birge
      • May 12–16: Ellis between Birge and Nye
      • May 19–26: Ellis between Nye and Converse
  • Ohio Department of Transportation:
    • U.S. 33 and SR 682 roundabout: Traffic maintained by flaggers on SR 682. Right shoulder closed on U.S. 33 westbound. SR 682 ramp to U.S. 33 westbound closed April 1 through Aug. 1. Estimated completion: Oct. 31.
    • SR 7 resurfacing: Begins April 28 from the Meigs County line to Church Road. Traffic will be maintained by flaggers. Estimated completion: July 15. 

Community

  • Hamfest flea market: Athens County Amateur Radio Association will host a flea market 8 a.m. to noon Sunday April 26. Entry fee required. Athens Community Center, 701 E. State St., Athens.
  • Sculpture park opening: The City of Athens and The Athens Municipal Arts Commission will open the Athens Sculpture Park at 4 p.m. Saturday, April 26. Athens Fire Station #1, 120 E. Stimson Ave., Athens.
  • Hocking College celebration: Hocking College Spring Gala “Celebrating the Decades,” 5:30 p.m., Friday, May 3. The Lodge, 15770 SR 691, Nelsonville.
  • Internships for high schoolers: Sophomores, juniors and seniors may apply for Project RISE’s paid internship opportunities through the Athens-Meigs Educational Service Center. Apply for an interview here.
