Bids

  • ATH-56-11.267, ODOT PID 118279, City Project #357: Sealed bids will be received by the City of Athens until 1:30 p.m. June 5. The project will remove the existing traffic signal and construct a roundabout at the intersection of Union St. (SR 56) and (SR 682). 
  • 2025 ANNUAL PAVING, City Project # 385: Sealed bids will be received by the City of Athens until 9:00 a.m. June 18. The work for which proposals are invited includes the furnishing of all labor, materials and equipment for the repair, milling, and resurfacing of streets.

Traffic

  • Jacksonville: Due to rain, paving has been delayed from its previous schedule by one week.
    • Red Dog Road and High Street from Jacksonville corporation limits to Fifth Street will be closed daily 7 a.m.–5 p.m. June 3–6, with local traffic only after 5 p.m.
    • South Eighth Street from Palmer to Railroad Streets; as well as West Palmer Street from Fourth and Fifth Streets will be closed 7 a.m.–5 p.m. June 5–6, with local traffic only after 5 p.m.
  • Ohio Department of Transportation:
    • U.S. 33 and SR 682 roundabout: Traffic maintained by flaggers on SR 682. Right shoulder closed on U.S. 33 westbound. SR 682 ramp to U.S. 33 westbound closed April 1 through Aug. 1. Estimated completion: Oct. 31.
    • SR 7 resurfacing: Meigs County line to Church Road. Traffic will be maintained by flaggers. Estimated completion: July 15. 
    • Coolville RCUT: Construction began on May 27 on U.S. 50 at Coolville. Lane closures will be in place in both directions. 

Seeking in Southeastern Ohio

  • Doula contracts available: HAPCAP for Health seeks doulas in the region to serve families through pregnancy, birth and post-partum care, on a contracted basis. HAPCAP also invites current and aspiring southeastern Ohio doulas to its Doula Convening, 1–3 p.m. Monday, June 16, at the SE Ohio Foodbank, 1005 C.I.C Drive, Logan.
  • Call for summit presentation proposals from women+: Athens Chamber of Commerce seeks a variety of presentation proposals for its ninth-annual Athens Area Women’s+ Summit. Proposals due by 5 p.m., Friday, June 6; Summit will be held 8:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m., Friday, October 10. 
  • Gently used parenting, children’s items: The Birth Circle seeks toys, clothes and furniture for pregnancy, post-partum, babies, and kids, for its annual yard sale raising funds to support local families. The Nest, 217 Columbus Road, Athens.

Athens County

  • OVMoD Grand Reopening: The Ohio Valley Museum of DIscovery will hold a grand reopening 5–7 p.m. Thursday, June 5, at the museum on Columbus Road in Athens. Starting June 6, the museum will be open 10 a.m.–4 p.m. Tuesday–Saturday. 
  • The American Discovery Trail Challenge: The ADT, which passes through numerous points in Athens County, will begin its Trail Challenge this week, inviting “hikers, bicyclists, runners, baby stroller pushers, skaters, and wheel-chair users” coast-to-coast to start their self-tracked journey on National Trail Day, Sunday, June 7. Register and track your miles here; review a map of the ADT in full. 
  • Daniel Tiger kindness event for kids: WOUB Learning Lab is bringing Daniel Tiger to the Ohio Valley Museum of Discovery as part of its free Be My Neighbor Day, 10 a.m.–1 p.m., Saturday, June 7. Explore STEM exhibits and take home PBS KIDS resources and books. Registration encouraged but not required; canned food donations welcome.
  • Self-guided garden tour: Athens County Humane Society will host its 31st annual Garden Tour Fundraiser any time between 11 a.m.– 4p.m. June 8 at the Athens Convention and Visitors Bureau, 667 E. State Street, Athens. Purchase tickets online or at the door.

Nelsonville

  • Inaugural farmer’s market: The Nelsonville Farmer’s Market invites the community to its first farmer’s market 4–7 p.m. Wednesday, June 4, then first Wednesday of the month through October. Athens County Community Cares Resource Center, 10 W. Washington St., Nelsonville.
  • Youth reading challenging: Students from East, Morrison-Gordon and The Plains Intermediate who read 10 books by Sunday, June 8, receive a free kids ticket and a free adult ticket to Education Night at the Copperheads (7 p.m., Thursday, June 12, Bob Wren Stadium, 140 S. Shafer St., Athens). Whoever reads the most books will throw out the game’s first pitch!
