Blaze is just a lanky teenager but is quite a handsome guy already. With a slender build and a long and narrow face, he screams “retriever mix!” Like most teenagers, Blaze is goofy and loves to have fun.
Unfortunately, Blaze fits a familiar stereotype of shelter dogs. He was found as a stray right at around a year old, a time when many dogs are dumped and enter the shelter system. Dogs at this age are energetic and strong and still figuring out how to be a dog. Just like teenagers, they need time and patience and soon emerge on the other side as adults.
Unfortunately, Blaze has another challenge to overcome, he is a black dog in a shelter with many other black dogs. Some studies suggest that black dogs wait longer to be adopted than dogs with other coat colors. We are hoping that Blaze will defy the odds of being a young, black dog and will find his people soon. Blaze has been dog selective in the shelter and like all shelter dogs, will need to meet other animals living in the home.
If you would like to meet Blaze, please call The Athens County Dog Shelter at 740-593-5415. If you cannot adopt, please consider fostering. Applications can be found at: https://www.fosdathens.com/foster
