City of Athens 


Traffic

  • Ohio Department of Transportation:
    • U.S. 33 expansion project: 25 miles of U.S. 33 in Athens and Meigs Counties will be converted from a two-lane highway to a four-lane, divided highway. This includes Pleasant Hill, Pleasanton Road, Rainbow Lake Road, and SR 681. Estimated completion: 2028. 
    • U.S. 33 and SR 682 roundabout: Traffic maintained by flaggers on SR 682. Right shoulder closed on U.S. 33 westbound. SR 682 ramp to U.S. 33 westbound closed April 1 through Aug. 1. Estimated completion: Oct. 31. 
    • SR 7 resurfacing: Meigs County line to Church Road. Traffic will be maintained by flaggers. Estimated completion: July 15.

Athens County

  • PUnderstand rising electricity costs: Kathryn Metz from the Ohio Consumers’ Counsel will answer questions about rising electricity prices at Assistance for Utilities Info-Booth, 11 a.m.–2 p.m. Monday, June 30. Learn how to safely shop for an alternative supplier, join a local aggregation program, find summer cooling assistance, and improve at-home energy efficiency.
  • Infant/child supply donations: Nelsonville Rotary Club and Pregnancy Resource Center will accept diapers, sunscreen and other infant/toddler supplies and other goods through Monday, June 30 at Rocky Boots, Unified Bank, and Adventure Pro Outdoors. Call 740-517-4422 to arrange pick up. 
  • Community center programming forum: The Athens Community Relations Commission invites the public to a facilitated discussion to identify, support and implement action around needed programming that supports all members of our community. 2–4 p.m., Sunday, June 28. Athens Community Center, 701 E. State St., Athens.
  • Seasonal cattle sort: Competitions, classes, workshops, music, and cattle sorting will be available at Smoke Run Ranch’s Summer Sort, Friday, June 27–Sunday, June 29. 6751 Hunterdon Road, Glouster.

Southeast Ohio

  • Medical donation program: Rural Action’s Zero Waste program redistributes medical equipment and supplies. Accepted medical supply donations include crutches and CPAP machines, as well as unused soft goods like gauze and bandages.   • OU Black alumni gathering: Ohio University Ebony Bobcat Network (EBN) will celebrate the 2025 EBN Alumni Awardees from 11 a.m.–1 p.m. Sunday, June 29. The VFW Hall, 6340 Melbury Ave., Solon.
  • Annual Alzheimer’s fundraising event: Registration for the 2025 Walk to End Alzheimer’s is open. The event will be held starting at 10 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 20. Athens Community Center, 701 E. State St., Athens.
