Traffic

  • City of Athens
    • Portion of East State Street closed: 74 E. State St. will close Tuesday, Dec. 16 for storm sewer investigation, from 9 a.m. until complete. No thru traffic. 
    • Free parking in Uptown garage: After 4 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 18; all day Saturday, Dec. 20, Wednesday, Dec. 24, and Thursday, Dec. 25. Excludes two-hour metered spaces on Level 1 Upper. The 72-hour parking restriction will be suspended Sunday, Dec. 14 through Sunday, Jan. 12. 
  • Ohio Department of Transportation
    • U.S. 50 Reduced Collision U-Turn (RCUT): Taking place on U.S. 50 at Coolville. Flaggers will be in place periodically. Estimated completion: Dec. 22.
    • U.S. 33 Athens-Meigs expansion: A two-lane to four-lane expansion project is taking place on U.S. 33 from Athens to Darwin and Five Points to Ravenswood. Lane closures will be in place in both directions on U.S. 33 between Pleasant Hill Road and Oxley Road. Rolling roadblocks will be in place during rock blasts. Flaggers will maintain traffic at side roads intermittently. Estimated completion: 2028.
  • Albany
    • Hebbardsville Road bridge: Athens County EMS announced Sept. 12 that unforeseen structural issues will cause a potential six-month closure of the bridge at Hebbardsville Road (CR 17A) at the Fisher Road intersection (CR 17). 
  • Chauncey
    • SR 682 sewer line project: Project ongoing between 3rd Street and 4th Street; temporary signals in use. One lane closed. Estimated completion: Jan. 9. 

General

  • EVC station in Nelsonville closed: The Electric Vehicle Charging stations at 30 E. Columbus St. will be closed for station maintenance beginning Tuesday, Dec. 16, until further notice.
  • Get food safety certified: ACEnet’s ServSafe Food Protection certification course for workers in food service will take place 9 a.m.–4 p.m. Dec. 16 and Dec. 17. $100/ACENet members; $125/public. Register here
  • Free Christmas tree pickup: The City of Athens will accept discarded live trees on Tuesdays and Fridays beginning Dec. 30, 2025 and through January. Residents should place Christmas trees at the curb and call the City’s yard waste pickup line at 740-592-3343 to schedule.
  • Apply to become Interim City Manager: The City of Nelsonville is accepting applications for the position of Interim City Manager.
  • Youth cheerleading group: Registration and practice night for the Panthers Pom-Pom Squad in Shade is 5:30–7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 18. Open to K-12th graders; $35 to register. Shade Community Center, Old SR 33, Shade.
  • Lodi Township Trustees meetings: The Lodi Township Trustees will have its Budget and Organizational meeting at 5 p.m. Jan. 1, at the township garage, 15525 Fossil Rock Road, Athens. There will be no regular January meeting.
