ATHENS, Ohio – The City of Athens is reminding residents and businesses that the deadline to file their 2025 Athens City income tax return is April 15, 2026. With the deadline approaching, taxpayers are encouraged to file early to avoid potential penalties and interest.
City officials are also advising taxpayers to be aware of recent federal changes affecting the United States Postal Service that may impact mailed tax returns. Because postmarks may no longer reliably reflect the exact date a piece of mail is dropped off at a local post office, mailing delays could affect whether a return is considered filed on time in Ohio.
To help ensure timely filing, taxpayers are encouraged to consider the following steps:
- File electronically to eliminate mailing uncertainties
- Request a manual postmark when dropping off mail at the post office
- Mail returns early rather than waiting until the deadline
- Use certified or registered mail to provide proof of mailing
Additionally, beginning April 1, 2026, taxpayers who choose to receive their refund by direct deposit must ensure that the name on their tax return or refund application exactly matches the name on their bank account. If the names do not match, the refund will instead be issued by paper check, which may delay receipt of funds.
Residents and businesses are encouraged to review their tax return information and banking details before filing to avoid processing delays.
Athens taxpayers may download tax forms to complete and mail here.
Taxpayers may also e-file their return and upload supporting documentation here.
