To the editor:
I am writing to raise concerns about pedestrian safety along State Route 682 and to propose the installation of a sidewalk to better protect those who travel on foot. Over the past year living off State Route 682, I have consistently observed individuals walking along this roadway, particularly near the Athens end. This area includes several high-traffic destinations, such as Kershaw Greene Apartments, Athens Surgical Suite, Little Fish Brewing, and University Estates. These locations generate frequent pedestrian activity along a roadway where traffic speeds range from 35 to 45 miles per hour.
Residents are often seen walking along the shoulder of State Route 682 to access West Union Street. I have personally observed individuals pushing strollers, walking dogs, and biking in close proximity to fast-moving traffic. This creates a hazardous environment for both pedestrians and drivers. Data further underscores these safety concerns. In 2025 alone, 50 car accidents were reported on State Route 682, including one fatality (Ohio State Highway Patrol; Ohio Traffic Safety Office).
Installing a sidewalk – at minimum along the Athens end of State Route 682 – would significantly improve pedestrian safety and provide a more secure, accessible route for community members.
