AMESVILLE, Ohio — The new Coonskin Library and Museum opened on May 5, showcasing the historic village library established in 1804.
The library’s original collection of over 50 books was funded by sales of local animal pelts in Boston, according to a Ohio University webpage chronicling the library’s history. The collection eventually reached 250 volumes, according to Ohio University Libraries.
Those books are now held in collections at Ohio University, the Ohio Historical Society and others. Some books and objects that were part of the original Coonskin Library are now on display at the new museum in Amesville.
