Barbara Minton

THE PLAINS- Barbara Baird Minton, 83 of The Plains, passed away Saturday, July 18, 2026 at Kimes Nursing Home in Athens following a short illness. She was born January 25, 1943 in Orlando, Florida, the daughter of Herber and June Minton.

She graduated in 1960 from Athens High School and continued to complete her Bachelor’s & Masters degrees at Ohio University with honors.

She began her career as a high school English teacher in Dayton city schools, retired as a middle school principal in the system and then returned with her daughter Jen to Athens. She joined the college of education at Ohio University where she supervised student teachers.

Barb was an avid reader and corresponded with teachers and her students from her past. She was a loyal fan of Ohio University Bobcat BB, attending games since she was a child.

She is survived by her beloved daughter Jen, cousin Jack Hogsett, and friend Rene Olson, former student and family friend Sheldon White.

Barbara had a great rapport with her students, Sheldon White wanted to add this quote.

“What a kind, wonderful soul and a big rock in my academic development as a high school student Barbara Minton once told me that my high school, Meadowdale, was holding back black students and she was not going to allow it. So she convinced the school that I and another student were capable of competing in her honors English class and the rest is history! I visited her recently, embraced her and her “bark” was just as strong as ever! One of my best academic motivators and favorite teacher ever! You will be missed!”

Barb was proceeded in death by her parents, “Nona” her beloved grandmother, five aunts and uncles.

No public services or memorials will be held, as requested by Barb.  Cremation arrangements are with Jagers & Sons Funeral Home, Athens. A message of comfort can be sent to: PBSJMINTON2012@gmail.com
