Gary Clair Sayers, 90 of Millfield went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday August 3, 2026. He was born November 26, 1935, in Ames Township to the late Clair Owen and Clara M. Keirns Sayers. Gary married his high school sweetheart M. Bernadine Weekley Sayers on December 12, 1953.
Gary was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years; a son, Anthony; his parents, Clair and Clara Keirns Sayers; a granddaughter, Tiffany (Ford) McPherson; three brothers, David, Monty, and Paul; and grandparents, Cecil and Ruth Keirns and Janie and Charles Sayers.
Gary is survived by his son, Justin (Susan) Sayers of Glouster; a daughter, Cathy (Lee) Coen of Millfield; daughter-in-law, Jan (Tony) Sayers of Albany; a sister, Karen Perry of Vinton County; ten grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren.
Gary enjoyed traveling, camping and woodworking. He joined the Amesville Masonic Lodge in September 1958 (67 years). He served as Worshipful Master four times. He was appointed as District Education Officer in 1990, 2001, and 2002 of the 17th Masonic District. Gary was a 32nd Degree Mason of the York Rite Body, Athens. He was also a 32nd Degree Mason of the Scottish Rite Body of Columbus, a member of the Aladdin Temple Shrine in Columbus and a member of the Athens Shrine Club. Gary served as Ames Township Trustee for 18 years and then re-elected in 2024 and served until May of 2026. He served on the Sunday Creek Water Board for seven years.
Gary worked for Equifax Services. He worked and retired as the Vice President of the First National Bank of Nelsonville and Glouster. He retired on February 20, 1998, after 17 years of employment. After retiring from the First National Bank, he worked several part-time jobs. Gary and his wife Bernadine owned and operated Sayers Country Crafts for several years.
He attended the Concord Union Church where he served as a member of the Board and as an Elder.
A visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, August 7, 2026, at Concord Union Church. A Masonic service will begin at 1 p.m., followed by a funeral service officiated by his grandson, Matthew Sayers. Interment will take place at Concord Cemetery. A luncheon will immediately follow the services in the Concord Church Pavilion. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Concord Union Church, 12275 N. Concord Road, Glouster, Ohio 45732.
