Dorothy Mae Henry Glass
AMESVILLE, Ohio – Dorothy Mae (Henry) Glass, 86, of Amesville, Ohio was born on August 31, 1939 and peacefully passed from this earthly life on Monday, August 3, 2026 at Lindley Inn Assisted Living in The Plains, Ohio.
Dorothy was the daughter of the late Harold McGee Henry and the late Edna Mae Hanning Henry and the daughter-in-law of the late Lee Dale Glass and the late Esther Lucille Wilson Glass. She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Jimmie Wilson Glass, who passed October 8, 2025. She was also preceded in death by her brother H. Wayne Henry, her sister-in-law Patsy Lee Glass, and her niece Kimberly Henry Page.
Born at Henry Farm on Henry Road just north of Amesville, Dorothy grew up understanding the value of hard work. Her parents were dairy farmers and believed that family, country, and education were important. In the early 1940s, Dorothy’s family purchased a Sears & Roebuck house kit and it was delivered to Amesville by train and built on their farm. During her school years, Dorothy participated in 4-H, cheerleading, Future Homemakers of America, and she was valedictorian of the Class of 1957 of Ames-Bern High School. Dorothy was Junior Fair Queen, Fireman’s Festival Queen, and Junior Carnival Queen. It was at Ames-Bern schools where she met her high school sweetheart and she and Jimmie were married on August 6, 1960, at the Amesville Presbyterian Church. Dorothy and Jimmie enjoyed roller skating, playing Euchre and Bingo, supporting the volunteer fire department and Federal Hocking Local Schools.
Prior to starting their family, Dorothy worked at The Athens Messenger and the Social Security office. While her children were at home, she was a substitute secretary at Amesville Elementary, a member of the band boosters, was chaperone for many band competitions and events and made homemade hotdog sauce for each and every home football game, scorebook keeper for the girls’ basketball team, and volunteered for over 40 years at Amesville Elementary where she especially enjoyed welcoming new kindergarten students at registration. She baked fresh banana bread each week for the staff, which was always a big hit. Dorothy was a member of the Amesville Presbyterian Church where she served as an elder, taught Sunday School, played in the handbell choir, and sang in the choir.
Dorothy and Jimmie cherished spending time and traveling with their dear friends, Richard and Janet Brown, and they were sound technicians for the Federal Valley Cloggers. Dorothy was also a member of Euphemia Chapter, Ohio Eastern Star, and later of the Athens Eastern Star chapter.
Dorothy enjoyed all things outdoors. She especially loved ferns, hostas, birds, and rocks of all shapes and sizes. Each time one of her children or grandchildren traveled, they would always bring her back a rock or two. Dorothy made many a baby blanket for newborns in the community. Jimmie and Dorothy also enjoyed nightly trips to the Glouster Dairy Queen and “small-medium” luscious ice cream cones. Dorothy made several friends in the local Amish community and especially enjoyed their Amish rugs.
She is survived by her children Trudi Rahn (Dennis) of Delaware, Ohio; David Glass (Cindy) of Guysville, Ohio; Catherine Blower (Mitch) of Athens; Jamie Parks (Craig Dickerson and son Dalton) of New Marshfield; and Stacie Glass of New Marshfield..
Thirteen (13) grandchildren and three (3) great grandchildren include: Travis Richardson, Bryan Richardson, Lacey Richardson, Logan Richardson, Connor Rahn, Emma Rahn; Emalee Glass Boston (Jacob), Letitia Glass Gillian (Scott), Anna Montle; Wyatt Blower, Laura Blower; Elizabeth Parks Netzley (Jack), and Rebecca Parks McAtee (Haden), Asa Boston, Leo Boston, and Charlotte Netzley.
She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Barbara Henry and two nephews, Brad Henry and Brent (Lisa) Henry.
Calling hours will be held 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, August 11 with Eastern Star Services at 7:30 p.m. at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home in Athens, Ohio. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 12 at the Amesville Cemetery. A luncheon for family and friends will be held at the Amesville Masonic Lodge directly following graveside services.
