Data shows dangerous accident rates for SR 50/32

To the editor:

The state has a database of accidents on highways across the state. It goes back five years. The categories of reports includes 1) Property Damage 2) Minor Injury 3) Serious Injury and 4) Fatal. I reviewed the accident reports on Rt. 50/32 just in Athens County.

Since 2021 (the data only goes back to 2021) there have been 23 Serious Injury accidents within Athens County on route 50/32. Additionally, there have been 7 accidents with at least one fatality with the total of those killed during that time is 11. The average is 6 Serious/Fatal accidents a year with 2.2 people dying annually. This is a safety issue that is begging for a solution. Surely this many lives lost and disrupted not to mention the cost is unacceptable.

Nearly half the accidents were failure to yield. The accident database is here.
