ATHENS, Ohio – The City of Athens will be conducting smoke testing at various locations throughout the city, starting on the East Side at East State and Madison Avenue.
Smoke testing is important because millions of gallons of storm water infiltrate our system each year and can overload our collection system and treatment plant. The sanitary system is designed for wastewater from homes and businesses to flow to the treatment plant. Smoke testing will help locate and identify the source of storm water infiltration in the City’s sewer system.
Testing is expected to take place between Monday, October 5, 2026, through Friday, October 9, 2026. This schedule is subject to change. Please check the City of Athens website for updates.
During the test, crews will send white smoke into the sewer system by blowing it into a manhole, and monitoring where the smoke escapes the system. The smoke is safe, non-toxic, odorless, and non-staining. Owners do not need to be home during the testing period and can continue using their facilities.
While testing, smoke may be seen around manhole covers, storm drains, roof vents, and areas of defects. Smoke will not enter your home or business unless there is an issue with the plumbing.
Prior to any testing, pour water down all the drains to fill traps, especially if you have a bathroom or plumbing fixture that isn’t being used regularly. Testing date will be posted on a portable VMS board in your area.
Both the Athens Police Department and Athens Fire Department have been notified of the locations and dates of areas to be tested.
