THE PLAINS, Ohio – Robert Earl Scott of The Plains passed away following a brief illness on Saturday, September 26, 2026, at O’Bleness Hospital, Athens. Surrounded by his loving family, Bob went home to his Lord and Savior.
Born May 25, 1944, to Irene and Robert N. Scott in The Plains. Bob spent his early years working on his family farm and attending school. From an early age, Bob was blessed with quick-wit and an uncanny sense of humor. Following his graduation from The Plains High School in 1962, Bob enlisted in the United States Air Force and was trained as a munitions specialist and later as a fixed-wing propellor mechanic. With the escalation of the US involvement in the Vietnam War, Bob was stationed out of the Royal Thai Air Force Base in Udorn, Thailand beginning in 1965. After a brief period of training Royal Thai Air Force members on munitions, he was assigned to a combat air maintenance remain overnight unit and supported aircrafts damaged while operating over enemy territory in Laos and Vietnam. Bob was deeply proud of his service.
After returning home from his tour of duty in 1966, he began working at Abex. Following, he went to work for City Loan from until the early 1970’s, where he then began working for Security Bank as a loan officer. Beginning 1978 he worked for the Ohio Department of Transportation where he retired in December of 2002.
Bob had many titles throughout his life: Butch, Scotty, Scott, Bob, and Dad but perhaps his most cherished was Pa. Bob treasured time with his family and found joy in being a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Talented, intelligent and brimming with ideas, he could fix anything, do anything, and make anything better; he was a man tremendously full of love and generosity.
Bob is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Julia Michael Scott; children Robert “Bobby” Scott and LeighAnn (Tom) Gabriel. Grandchildren; Elizabeth (Michael) Reeve, Robert Carl (Blue) Scott, Emily Scott, and Elise Scott. Great-grandchildren; Jensen, Bennett, and Elza. Step grandson; Rob Gabriel. Step-great grandchildren; Jackson Gabriel and Grayson Gabriel. Sister; Treva Nannette “Susie” Scott and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, step-father; William Thompson and granddaughter, Sidney Belle Scott.
Funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, 2026, at Jagers & Sons Funeral Home with Rev. David Roach officiating. Burial will be in Athens Memory Gardens. Friends may call Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Military Rites will be conducted by the Honor Guard of K.T. Crossen Post 21 American Legion and VFW Post 9893.
