ATHENS- Anna Hedges, 98, of Athens died peacefully on Tuesday, January 14, 2025 at The Laurels of Athens.  (Minnie) Anna Maxwell Hedges was born in Athens, Ohio on April 24, 1926 to Virgil Coler Maxwell and Mary Elizabeth Secoy Maxwell. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; by two brothers, Herbert Leonard (infant) and George Austin Maxwell; by two infant sons; and by her husband of 65 years, Robert Elson Hedges, in 2013. 

She is survived by sons Stephen Austin Hedges with wife Cheryl Baker Hedges of Athens and (Carl) Anson Hedges with husband Philip Wirth of Kingsley, Pennsylvania, as well as by a grandson, Benjamin Austin Hedges with wife Allyssa Young Hedges of Pataskala, Ohio. Anna wanted to be remembered as first a daughter and sister, then a wife and mother, then a grandmother and finally a widow.

Anna received her elementary education at both the old and the new Mechanicsburg schools and the Rufus Putnam school, and her middle and high school educations at Athens City Schools, graduating in 1944. She graduated from Ohio University with a B.S. in Home Economics in 1948 and married Robert Hedges nine days later, on June 15. While Anna was primarily a homemaker, she also did frequent work outside the home, including as a dietitian for Ohio University, as a cashier for C&E grocery, as a substitute rural mail carrier for the Athens Post Office, as a seamstress for Good Dry Cleaners, and as a volunteer for the O’Bleness Hospital.
