Athens names new street for county’s first Black attorney

The City of Athens will be hosting a street sign unveiling on February 29 at 10 a.m. to commemorate naming a new street after Athens County’s first Black attorney, Andrew Jackson Davison, and his wife, Eliza Brown Davison. Eliza is famous in her own right as cook for General George Custer during the Civil War.

The unveiling will be held at the new street, located along Herrold Avenue between West Union and West State Streets. It is recommended to park at West State Street Park and walk since space for vehicles is limited.

In addition to the unveiling, students from Athens City Schools will be sharing a brief history of Andrew Jackson and Eliza Davison as well as remarks by Mayor Steve Patterson.
