Cat of the Week: Sylvia Plath

Female, 6 years old

At first encounter, Sylvia Plath seems feral, she hisses, she swats, she keeps the world at claw’s length. But there is a terrible secret written into her body: Sylvia is declawed. The first joint of each toe was taken from her, a quiet amputation that leaves lifelong pain and no true way to defend herself. What looks like hostility is really fear, a girl who learned too early that safety can be taken away.

Sylvia is a gorgeous, spicy creature, all fire and intelligence, and she would flourish in a home that belongs to her alone. A place where she can be beautiful without being afraid. Most of all, she needs a human who understands that she was dealt a cruel hand, and who will meet her not with force, but with patience, reverence, and love. Sylvia does not ask for much, only the dignity of being understood, and the chance to finally rest.
