ATHENS, Ohio — A final pre-trial hearing for Jean Demosky, the former director of Athens County Job and Family Services, was postponed Monday morning to October.
Special prosecutor Ron O’Brien and criminal defense attorney Jonathan Tyack met with the judge Aug. 17 at the Common Pleas Court to exchange discovery in an off-the-record session. Athens County Court of Common Pleas visiting Judge John T. Wallace confirmed the postponement to the Independent.
Wallace, who retired in 2022, was appointed to the case by the Ohio Supreme Court after Judge George P. McCarthy recused himself.
Demosky is now set for a final pre-trial hearing Monday, Oct. 19. New trial dates are not yet available on the court docket.
Demosky is charged with seven felony counts and one misdemeanor charge related to allegations that she illegally spent tax dollars on the Athens County Department of Job and Family Services Community Cares Fund, a private nonprofit organization.
Athens County JFS owes an estimated $2.5 million in repayments to the state after it found the county incorrectly sought reimbursements for the nonprofit’s work.
