Meet Cain, an absolute survivor up for adoption through the Athens County Dog Shelter and the Athens County Humane Society. Cain was seized for neglect after being tied out on a lead and forgotten about. Based on reports, he was frequently attacked by other dogs. He was helpless to get away and now he bears both physical and emotional scars. Because of this background, we think Cain would be more comfortable as the only dog in the home.
While Cain was abandoned outside, he undoubtedly suffered endless bug bites, including from mosquitoes. He was heartworm positive when we found him, which is spread by mosquito bites, and is a long and expensive process to treat. Cain has already started his treatment which requires a period of reduced physical activity and is doing well! If he is adopted, the remaining treatment will be paid for. Watching dogs go through heartworm treatment in the shelter is heartbreaking, and thankfully an amazing foster stepped up.
Cain’s foster reports that he adapted perfectly to home life. He has had no accidents in the house and is quite the cuddle bug, preferring to sleep close to his humans on the couch and in bed. His only flaw is that he loves to search the counters and trash for snacks. After being neglected, can you blame him? We are wishing Cain all of the treats he wants and a quick recovery.
