Dog of the Week: Elsa

7-28-25, female lab mix, 10yo6mo, 70#, OWNER DECEASED

Elsa once had a home in The Plains.  Then her human died and her whole world was thrown into upheaval.  She was left alone in her former human’s home in her grief. Some of her human’s relatives stopped by to feed her, but they couldn’t take her in.  Eventually, she was brought to the shelter, and was understandably upset – lots of people, lots of dogs, and being handled overwhelmed her.

But the Friends of the Shelter Dogs and the Athens Shelter staff don’t give up that easily.  We could see that she was traumatized, and trauma takes however long it takes to work out.

Slowly, Elsa’s been healing.  She goes on regular walks with volunteers.  She loves string cheese.  She is a helper to other dogs entering the shelter and comforts them on walks when they are scared.  Recently, after being in the shelter for over 2 months, she started to show signs of wanting to play and to be touched.

But she’s still not there yet.  She needs someone who will help her recover on her timeline.
