Dog of the Week: Jack

Meet Jack, a stunningly handsome and gentle black lab mix. Although Jack looks healthy now, he has been through some difficult times. Jack came into the shelter as a stray, weighing just 34 pounds. He was desperately thin and painfully shy. A kind foster took him in to help him regain the much-needed weight and confidence.

In foster, Jack has blossomed. He has filled out physically but still gets over the top excited for food. He is gentle with the resident cat and loves going for walks. Unfortunately his fosters suspect that Jack was not only starved but likely also abused. It has taken him time to warm up to men, especially if they raise their voice.

Jack attended a recent adoption event which was a great test of his progress. Although he started off the day shy, he met so many strangers and other dogs who were all drawn in by his soft eyes and kind demeanor. By the end of the day, he had really come out of his shell. With more socialization and practice, we know Jack will re-learn how to trust. If only Jack could see what we do from the outside. That he is a kind, gentle, and loving dog who deserves nothing but goodness from here out.

Call The Athens County Dog Shelter at 740-593-5415 to meet Jack. Cannot adopt? Consider fostering. You can fill out an application at: www.fosdathens.com/foster
