ATHENS, Ohio – Flat track motorcycle racing kicked up some dust last weekend at the Athens County Fairgrounds thanks to promoter Richard Brodock and Brodock Motorsports.
Known as the oldest extreme sport in the United States, flat track racing eventually evolved into road racing and motocross. The event is in its fifth year at the Athens County Fairgrounds, where approximately 15 races accommodating various ages, levels, and types of bikes at this year’s fair.
What sets this sport apart from others, according to Brodock, is the community.
“It’s a family-oriented event with multiple generations racing in events,” he told the Independent.
Brodock said the Litten Family out of northern Ohio embodies what he loves about the sport.
Sierra Litten, 9, and her sister Kiley Litten, known as “Smiley Kiley,” 8, have been riding since age 4, and are fifth-generation “flat trackers,” their father Sean Litten told the Independent. The girls have a dedicated coach in Skinny Ricky, a fellow racer, event announcer and sponsor to Sierra and Kiley.
“We go wherever the race is,” Sean Litten said.
In addition to the Litten family, multiple riders participated in the Athens events this month, in Brodock, who has been racing for about 12 years, holds up to 15 events a year, with about six of these events occurring in Southeast Ohio, he said.
