Stand with senior citizens by passing Issue 21

To the editor:

As someone who’s been around for a while, I can tell you that getting older comes with its own set of challenges. We all want to stay as independent as possible, but sometimes our health or mobility can slow us down. And with the way grocery prices keep climbing, it’s getting harder for many of us seniors to afford the basics, let alone eat well.

But I believe Athens County can do better by its seniors.

The Meals on Wheels Program is one of the best things we’ve got going. It’s not just about the food—though those hot meals delivered three times a week are a blessing. It’s also about knowing that someone will check in on you, that you’re not alone. For many of us, the driver who brings those meals is the only person we might see that day.

Now, Issue 21 is our chance to continue helping our fellow seniors. This levy is a renewal. That means that it will not add new taxes, but allow us to continue funding the program at its current level. We’re talking about over 40,000 meals each year, reaching every corner of Athens County—from Albany and Nelsonville to all the little towns in between.

So, I’m asking you, as a fellow senior and neighbor, to please vote YES on Issue 21, the Senior Services Levy, in November. Let’s make sure every senior in our community gets the nutrition and care they need.

Thank you for standing with us.
