To the editor:
Let’s get this definition of “industrial plunder” clear and spread more awareness so folks can understand why so many local citizens oppose the data center and the plastics manufacturing plant proposed for Athens County. We are not against bringing in more jobs as long as they don’t bring along with them destructive problems such as industrial plunder.
Industrial plunder refers to the systematic theft, exploitation, and/or extraction of a region, company, or nation’s material wealth, resources, and assets by industrial or corporate entities. This practice typically involves stripping a sector of its value through aggressive corporate raiding, monopolistic exploitation, and/or the extraction of natural resources without fair compensation. A compelling example is the boom-and-bust history of Appalachia. It has laid waste to our land and resources, leaving behind long-term unemployment and continuing generational poverty.
