Lies about hurricane relief another strike against Trump

To the editor:

If someone were to ask me why I am a Never Trumper, I would have trouble giving a brief answer — my list is long. However, in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, one reason that Trump should never be President has shot to the top of my list: Trump’s dangerous inability to speak the truth.

FEMA and other rescue workers are finding their efforts to help hurricane victims hampered by various falsehoods that are keeping people from reaching out for help. One person spreading those falsehoods is Donald Trump, who keeps saying disaster-relief funds are being diverted to provide housing for migrants (not true), and suggesting that Democrats are working to block funds for people in so-called “Conservative” areas in North Carolina (also not true). Because of his lies, as well as other conspiracy theories spread on sites like X, many needy people are too skeptical to seek help from the very personnel who could provide much-needed aid and assistance.

Trump uses lies to rile and divide. That is bad enough, but in North Carolina’s hurricane-damaged areas, what he is doing is even more unforgivable — he is threatening the recovery of people who have lost everything.
