To the editor:
We are in a constitutional crisis. Trump is defying laws and blatantly defying court orders.
His refusal to facilitate the return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia from the torture prison in El Salvador, as the court has ordered, is an act of tyranny. His seizing and flying more than 200 Venezuelan migrants there to the El Salvador prison, without proof of wrongdoing, is another act of tyranny, and terrifying. Trump claims he is justified under the Alien Enemies Act, but, excuse me, you can only legally use that when the U.S. is at war.
He’s now musing that he can deport U.S. citizens to prisons abroad, those of us who won’t bow to his demands. Sound threatening?
He is putting this country in chaos. On purpose. His intent is to threaten and paralyze us, not only with unconstitutional disappearances, but with his slew of unprecedented and unlawful firings and withholding of vital funds from agencies, institutions and research. These actions hurt veterans, children, the elderly, people with medical issues, and persons with disabilities, while he demands that members of Congress extend huge tax cuts for some of the richest people on the planet.
It’s time for impeachment. John Husted, Bernie Moreno and Troy Balderson: It’s time for integrity and courage. It’s time to do your job. It’s time to join hands with your Democratic and Republican colleagues to protect yourselves, our people and our country.
The momentum of constitutional violations and unlawful actions by Trump and his billionaire supporters is accelerating. None of us are safe.
