THE PLAINS- Lucy M. McDonald, 104, formerly of The Plains, went to be with the Lord on January 25, 2024. She was born February 1, 1919. She was the daughter of the late Cecil Keirns and Ruth Mingus Keirns.
She was a long-time resident of The Plains, Ohio. She was an active member of The Plains United Methodist Church and served on various committees. She was a graduate of Ames-Bern High School in 1938. On October 24,1939, she married the love of her life Clarence “Sam” McDonald, and they were married for 76 years until his death in 2015.
Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by four sisters, Altha (Maron) Snyder, Clara (Clair) Sayers, Marie (Spud) Seel, Ada (Wilbur) Cartwright, and one brother Erret Ray Keirns.
She is survived two brothers, Albert (Ida) Keirns and Wayne (Arlene) Keirns. Wayne was raised by Lucy and her late husband Sam. Wayne and Arlene have two sons, Todd (Natalie) Keirns and Chad (Brenda) Keirns. There are three great grandchildren. She is also survived by her Chinese granddaughter Li Luo (Weian) Wang, and their two children.
Lucy was an avid horseback rider and was ln 2018 “Citizen of the Year” and “The First Grand Marshall for The Plains Indian Mound Festival”. Lucy and Sam were avid gardeners and raised so much that they gave away about as much as they used. Lucy retired from Ohio University in 1983 after 16 years.
Funeral service will be conducted Saturday, February 3rd at 12:00 noon at The Plains United Methodist Church, 3 N. Plains Rd., The Plains with Rev. David Roach officiating. Burial will be in Hooper Ridge Cemetery, Ames Township. Friends may call at the church Saturday from 10:30 a.m. until time of service. Arrangements are with Jagers & Sons Funeral Home, Athens.
