CHAUNCEY- Marilyn Esther Metcalf (O’Rourke), age 92, passed away peacefully on March 31, 2025, in Jacksonville, North Carolina. Born on June 2, 1932, in Chauncey, Ohio, Marilyn lived a long and meaningful life marked by devotion to her family and a love for simple joys.
Marilyn was the beloved wife of Jack Metcalf Sr., with whom she shared 50 years of marriage until his passing. Together they built a life rooted in love and family in Chauncey, Ohio. She was the cherished daughter of Walter and Esther O’Rourke, also of Chauncey.
She is lovingly remembered by her children: Rebecca Metcalf of Jacksonville, NC (formerly of Chauncey, OH), and Jack Metcalf Jr. and his wife Rhonda of Jacksonville, NC. Marilyn’s legacy continues through her three grandchildren: Jack Metcalf III (Kelly) of Kenyon, MN; Jessica Grissett (Miles) of Jacksonville, NC; and James Metcalf (Amber) of Beulaville, NC. She was also blessed with seven great-grandchildren: Sara and Savannah Metcalf of Kenyon, MN; Whitney and Julie Grissett of Jacksonville, NC; and Wyatt, Janalee, and Drake Metcalf of Beulaville, NC.
Marilyn found joy in the everyday pleasures of life. She was an avid reader who delighted in exploring new stories and ideas through books. Her passion for cooking brought warmth to countless family gatherings over the years. She also enjoyed traveling—experiencing new places with curiosity and appreciation.
Those who knew Marilyn remember her as a caring and loving mother, wife, grandmother, and friend. Her kindness left a lasting impression on all who had the privilege to know her.
A graveside service will be held to honor Marilyn’s life at Thursday, May 29, 2025, from 11:00 AM at Hilltop Cemetery, Millfield, Ohio. Arrangements are with Jagers & Sons Funeral Home, Athens.
