Maydelle O. Helwig

ATHENS — Maydelle O. Helwig, 102, of Athens, passed away February 19, 2023. She was born in McConnelsville on March 27, 1920, to the late Howard Preston Hamilton and Mary Jenkins Hamilton.

Maydelle was a graduate of York High School in Morgan County and of Ohio University.  After teaching in Morgan and Franklin counties, she taught at East Elementary School in Athens for 27 years, retiring in 1975.  She was a lifetime member of the Ohio Retired Teachers Association. She was an active member of the Athens First Christian Church, attending regularly for many years.

She was preceded in her death by her husband of 69 years, Lawrence (Larry) Helwig. 

She is survived by two daughters, Connie (Hector) Flores of Wilmington, NC, and Janet (Steve) Montgomery of Reynoldsburg, OH; seven grandchildren, Jason (Jennifer) Whited of Greenville, NC; Scott Montgomery of Reynoldsburg, OH; Megan Peters of Goodyear, AZ; Robin (Jeff) Sharps of Granville, OH; Todd Whited, Tracy (Brian) Beach of Plain City, OH; and Carrie (Patrick) Antrim of Scottsdale, AZ.  She took much joy from her 14 great-grandchildren, Taryn and Trystan Whited; Stella and Scarlett Peters; Nora, Sawyer, Stephen and Riley Antrim; Morgan and Garrett Sharps; Grant and Molly Montgomery; Hannah and Logan Beach; and Nora and Sawyer Konings.

Funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 4, at Jagers & Sons Funeral Home, Athens, with burial in Athens Memory Gardens.  Friends may call at the funeral home from 11 a.m. Saturday, March 4, until time of service.
