Memorial Day 2026 observations (Updated)

ATHENS COUNTY, Ohio — Athens County is honoring its veterans this Memorial Day weekend. Here’s how:

Saturday, May 23

11 a.m.: Civil War Round Table Memorial Day Dedication. Featuring Civil War reenactors, a presentation about three three United States Colored Troops Civil War Soldiers who are buried in Nelsonville’s Fort Street Cemetery, and a headstone rededication ceremony. Nelsonville Public Library, 95 W. Washington St., Nelsonville. This is not a library-sponsored event.

Monday, May 25 (Memorial Day)

7 a.m.: American Legion Post 21 Memorial Day observances, beginning 7–9 a.m. with breakfast. Parade lineup at 10 a.m. at the intersection of Congress and West Washington streets; parade at 10:30 a.m. leading up to a ceremony at 11 a.m. at the West Union Street cemetery. Lunch provided at the Legion following the ceremony. Uptown and 520 W. Union St., Athens.

10:30 a.m.: New Marshfield Memorial Day Services. New Marshfield Cemetery, 4559 Old SR 56, New Marshfield.

11 a.m.: Waterloo Community Senior Center Memorial Day Lunch. 4005 Old SR 56, New Marshfield.

1 p.m.: Memorial Day at the Ridges, by National Alliance on Mental Illness Athens. Cemetery #1. Ceremony to honor Adam Kern, Civil War veteran, and Sallie Clice. Water Tower Drive, Athens.
