
ATHENS COUNTY, Ohio –– On Monday, Jan. 19, schools and businesses throughout Athens County will honor Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a federal holiday commemorating the civil rights icon.

Monday, Jan. 19
9:30 a.m.: MLK, Jr. Celebration Silent March. Helen Mauck Galbreath Memorial Chapel, 43 University Terrace, Athens.
10 a.m.: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebratory Brunch, student and community remarks and performances under theme “Building Community, Uniting a Nation the Nonviolent Way,” and remarks from Joy Bivens, of the Franklin County Board of Commissioners’ health and human services agencies, and David Butcher of the Tablertown People of Color Museum. Baker University Center, 1 Park Place, Athens.
1 p.m.: MLK Week Screening “Ain’t No Back To A Merry-Go-Round,” a documentary about Howard University students who in 1960 took over a “whites-only” carousel at the Glen Echo Amusement Park in Maryland. Followed by a panel discussion; event co-produced by Racial Equity Coalition, Athens and NAACP Athens County. Free tickets with registration. Athena Cinema, 20 Court St., Athens.
Friday, Jan. 23
4 p.m.: MLK Dessert Reception. Hot beverages and baked goods provided. Baker University Center, 1 Park Place, The Front Room Coffeehouse, Athens.
