Nelsonville Mayor’s Court officially set to return

NELSONVILLE, Ohio — It’s official: Nelsonville Mayor’s Court is back.

At its July 8 regular meeting, Nelsonville City Council unanimously passed an ordinance reinstating the court, which has not met since November 2023.

Council heard first reading of ordinances 45-24, 46-24 and 47-24 at its June 24 meeting. The first ordinance reinstitutes the court; the second establishes the schedule of court costs; and the third sets the court’s bond schedule.

Council Vice President Nancy Sonick said the court should return “toward the end of August.”

The council unanimously passed Resolution 2297, which seeks to put the renewal of a 5-year street maintenance levy up for vote this November. The renewal will generate about $98,325 annually, councilman Cory Taylor said.

The council also passed on second reading ordinances amending the 2024 appropriations and establishing a policy on rewards and rebate programs for the city’s purchasing process.

On first reading, the council passed 5-1 emergency Ordinance 51-24, with councilman Jonathan Flowers the lone no vote. The ordinance authorizes the city manager to enter into a lease-purchase agreement for a pumper fire truck.

Flowers also voted against Ordinance 52-24, which the council passed 5-1 on an emergency  first reading as well. That ordinance authorizes the city to sign a public defender contract with Athens County.

Likewise, Flowers voted against Ordinance 56-24, which the council also passed 5-1 on emergency first reading, to authorize the city manager to renew its contract with the city criminal prosecutor, Jamarcus Macartney of the Athens County Prosecutor’s Office.

The council unanimously passed on first reading a resolution directing the city manager to explore Abandoned Mine Land Economic Revitalization grant funding.

Nelsonville Police Department Chief Devon Tolliver  shared the NPD’s June monthly report. In June, the NPD:

  • Responded to 434 calls for service.
  • Conducted 49 traffic stops.
  • Issued 18 citations.
  • Issued seven parking citations.
  • Investigated five crashes.
  • Made 35 criminal arrests
