MILLFIELD, Ohio – Anthony Joseph “AJ” Gabriel, 45 of Athens, Ohio, passed away Friday, April 10, 2026. Born January 17, 1981, he was known to all of us as AJ. He possessed boundless spirit and a genuine love for simple rugged pleasures.
AJ spent his career working with his hands as an electrician and a boiler operator, though his heart was always happiest when he was working outdoors, an avid hunter he found peace in the woods. However, his greatest joy has found in the company of those he loved.
Of all his milestones, AJ’s proudest accomplishment was his children. He was a dedicated father and grandfather who poured his energy into his family and cherished every moment spent with close friends.
He is survived by a life partner of 30 years, Ashley Simpkins, his father Anthony Gabriel, and his brother, Jason Gabriel. His legacy lives on through his children, Austin (Johnna Gardner) Gabriel, Chandler (Marina Mullins) Gabriel, Elizabeth “Reese” (Nate Hanson) Gabriel, Avery Gabriel and Sawyer Gabriel. He also leaves behind two cherished grandchildren, Audrey and Archer Gabriel, and his father-in-law, Robert Simpkins.
AJ was preceded in death by his beloved son Anderson “Andy” Gabriel and his mother Carolyn Sue “Susie” Gabriel.
And keeping with AJ’s nature, a private service will be held at a later date.
